FAQ

What is new about the Panaray 402 Series II loudspeaker?

It features the following improvements:

  • The cabinet and grille have been redesigned to update the look of the speaker
  • The product has met or exceeded strict environmental testing for long life. We test for durability in heat, cold, salt fog, humidity, and sand and dust conditions
  • The fuse has been removed and the speaker now has an internal protection circuit that trips and resets should the input to the speaker exceed recommended levels
  • The drivers are new. The environmental durability is built-in. The soft parts of the driver are impregnated with Kevlar and other resins for moisture resistance. The hard parts are coated for resistance to damage from harsh weather
  • The rear connectors are now two parallel-wired Neutrik NL4 Speakon receptacles
  • The loudspeaker comes in black or white
  • There is a new Panaray System Digital Controller II loaded with simple-to-use presets for the 402 Series II loudspeaker II in mono or stereo, singles or pairs, and crossed over with Bose® bass loudspeakers

What is unchanged about the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker?

The Panaray 402 II still provides high-fidelity, natural sound from a compact, lightweight enclosure. Its speaker uses innovative design features that have characterized its performance since the first Panaray 402 speakers were introduced. Here is a list of those innovations:

  • Articulated Array speaker configuration
  • 4.5-inch drivers
  • Rugged, durable cabinet
  • Transit case available for portable use

When was the first Panaray 402 loudspeaker made?

Bose introduced the Panaray 402 Series I in 1982.

What are the benefits of the 4.5-inch drivers?

The drivers provide a more consistent sound field than conventional speakers that rely on woofers, tweeters and crossovers.Traditional speakers need to electronically cross their drivers in one or two bands. These crossovers usually cause a dip or a spike in the frequency response of the speaker, adding an unnatural element to the speaker performance. Additionally, these crossovers often occur in the frequency range of voice reproduction, the range at which human ears are most sensitive to discrepancies in sound fidelity. The patented 4.5-inch driver design also dissipates heat more easily than conventional transducers for greater power handling. Cooler drivers have a longer life with greater reliability. Four full-range drivers in a single Panaray 402 speaker enclosure can handle 120-watt continuous or 480-watt peak power. Bose has engineered exceptional durability and reliability into this driver, and is continuously improving on its strength and acoustic clarity.

Bose specifies that this speaker can be installed outdoors. What does that mean?

The environmental durability is built in. The soft parts of the driver are impregnated with Kevlar and other resins for moisture resistance. The hard parts are coated for resistance to damage from harsh weather. It has met or exceeded strict environmental testing for long life. We test for durability in extreme heat, cold, salt fog, humidity, and sand and dust conditions.

What is different about the grille?

The styling on the grille is new and mimics the elegant styling of the Panaray 502® A loudspeaker. The grille is now made of metal for greater environmental durability.

What is an Articulated Array configuration?

Bose discovered that using an array of full-range drivers and a ported enclosure could create full-range sound reproduction with greater clarity and smoothness. The Articulated Array speaker baffle configures the four full-range drivers to provide consistent and wide horizontal and vertical dispersion over all bandwidths.

Does the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker work with the old controller?

The 402C controller is discontinued. If you have 402C controllers in the project already, we do not recommend using the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker with the previous version of the 402C controller. The Panaray system digital controller II is programmed for the Panaray 402 I and 402 II loudspeakers, and has easily selectable settings for mono, stereo and two-way use of the speaker with Bose® bass loudspeakers.

What are the connectors on the back of the speaker?

Two Neutrik NL4 Speakon connectors, wired in parallel.

Where do I cross it over with the Panaray MB4 or 502 B?

We recommend that you crossover the Panaray 402 II speaker at 160 Hz when using it with a Bose® bass loudspeaker.

What brackets come with the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker?

Brackets for this loudspeaker are optional; they are weather resistant.

  • WBP-4 402 Bi-pivot wall bracket
  • SB-4 402 Single fly bracket

The brackets are available in black or white.

Are the brackets environmental?

The steel materials in the brackets are a pre-coated G90 (hot dipped galvanized) material. The products are then powder coated. We do not recommend these brackets for high-salt fog environments, such as cruise ships, but standard outdoor installation is acceptable and the brackets are adequately protected. Thin surface scratches can be tolerated, provided they're not too wide or deep. The pre-coating will provide adequate galvanic protection across thin scratches.

Is the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker actively equalized?

Yes, it requires active equalization, which ensures balanced low, mid and high frequencies in the loudspeaker. In addition, it provides high- and low-band pass filtering.

How do I get the proper equalization for the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker?

There are two active equalization options for this loudspeaker: the Panaray system digital controller II, and the ControlSpace® ESP-88 system.

What are the design rules?

The design rules for the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker are the same as for the Series I loudspeaker.

What colors are available for the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker?

It comes in black or white.

Is the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker paintable?

No.

Can I use the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker with the TK-4 carrying case?

The TK-4 transit kit has been discontinued and replaced by the TK-402 transit kit with grilles. This new kit provides two metal grilles with logos for portable use.

How do I get the Panaray 402 E loudspeaker?

The Panaray 402® E is no longer available.

What is the warranty on the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker?

As with all Bose® professional loudspeakers, the Panaray 402 II loudspeaker is covered by a five-year limited warranty that is fully transferable.
